ETH user account

Members of ETH Zurich receive a username and an initial password at the beginning of their studies or employment. The username is automatically assigned by the system and can not be changed during the course of the study or the employment, not even with name changes such as for example after marriage. The ETH username is the primary username, it is required to create access to most of the IT services at ETH.

The most important IT services include:

Account Application
ETH user account general authentication ETH wide
Mailbox email-/calendar service, active directory account
VPN access the ETH network using a commercial internet provider, wireles access points or docking stations at the ETH.
IT Shop software distribution system for employees and students
NAS central file system for student home directories and student homepages

The initial user password is communicated to the new users per postal mail. The password for all services can only be changed by using the http://password.ethz.ch interface.

The ETH user administration is integrated in the Swiss universities authentication and authorizing infrastructure federation (AAI) Switch

How to find the ETH user account name of a Person

In case you need the ETH user account name of a person to transfer credits for printing or for other purposes, you can find it with Outlook / Webmail

Create a New Message

Open the Global Adress Book

Double Click on the Display Name

You see the Contact Card of the Person and on the Right Corner the Alias Entry, this one is the ETH user account Name.
